Another cemetery morning

It is interesting how the weather changes any landscape but especially the cemetery one that seems to be just like an ocean of tombstones and mausoleums amongst trees and bushes. The result is that you notice things you have not noticed before. We walked by the George Miller Mausoleum many times before but today I noticed not only that is looks like a castle keep but that is has second floor with two windows. Of course we had a few jokes about who resides on the second floor and in the attic. Funny enough, if you look inside, you will find that it has no floors and the building is just one open space. Upon closer inspection, we found a beautiful Christ fresco at the back wall.

Interestingly enough, the George Miller Mausoleum is rare both in its architecture and history. It was designed and erected by the Harrison Granite Company of New York City in 1919 in the form of a medieval "keep". Keeps are the main towers of castles and were usually designed with enough space to serve as living quarters for the royal family in times of siege. One would think that the Miller family must have had some royal lineage in the background, but such is not the case.

George Miller Mausoleum

The Miller Mausoleum is an oddity in the funerary industry. It is a "used" or, perhaps more delicately put, a "previously owned" mausoleum. The mausoleum was originally commissioned by Adam Tindel, who bought the lot in 1919. Later that year, the mausoleum was erected, followed closely by the interment of Harris Emory Tindel. Then, according to cemetery records, on December 7th, 2928, an order was issued to transfer the bodies to another cemetery and to sandblast the Tindel name of the building.

Eventually, George Miller purchased the previously occupied mausoleum and cemetery record indicate that on January 6th, 1937 his ashes were placed in crypt #3.
