The simple joy of gifts

There is something absolutely magical about Mother's day. It is interesting that Henry asked this morning at breakfast where did this holiday come from. I always thought it was a Hallmark holiday just to find out that it actually originated here in Philadelphia. Anyway, my children and husband get really excited about celebrating me, as a mother. They go out of their way to plan something special, usually starting with meaningful handmade cards and little gifts, a walk or hike and a great meal.

It has been a tradition for years that my husband, Jeffrey, buys me something for our yard. In the past it would be flowers and in more recent years it has been trees and bushes. It is the sweetest memory I have, each time I look at any of those wonderful trees I cherish the love, care and appreciation that comes with being a mother. I look forward to their new growth, new abundance of flowers and their beautiful radiance.

When it comes to memories, I love the idea of linking purchases with sweet memories. There are some very memorable purchases that marked important milestones. A few years ago, when I returned back to the work part time, I purchased a new sofa with the first several paychecks. Today, the lovely teal sofa in our living room reminds me of this specific accomplishment. Another one of my favorite purchases is my front porch rattan furniture. I had this furniture set in mind for a long time and when I finally found it, I purchased it with my meditation savings. It is our favorite place to hang out all spring, summer and fall and it has a very zen like feeling.

In today's fast moving and disposable world, a gift is losing its true meaning and value. So bring on that really hygge experience into your gifts and purchases so you have something wonderful to remind you of those sweet memories. It is a unique and heartwarming experience.
