The secret to a clean entryway

A streamlined entryway is essential to every home. No one wants to see your messes at their first glimpse of your home. Recently, I revisited our entryway and made some adjustments. The key is to finding a place for all items as you enter your home and to account for the need of a little bit of daily maintenance. Just like with any kind of organization, once you establish your system, you will need to train yourself and other members of household to put their keys, shoes, coats and hats and their bags and lunch boxes into their designated spot. You can take this as a lesson in mindfulness. I like to address aesthetics and functionality at the same time. These are some lessons I have learned along the way.

1. Hang your keys upon your arrival in its designated spot. I really like using wall mounted key rack just like this one (wall mounted key holder). This has been a solid solution for my husband's battle of 'where are my keys'.

2. Toss out broken umbrellas, outgrown or mismatched children's wear, junk mail and bags with holes or signs of wear.

3. Keep only shoes and bags you use daily and put away all the rest. This includes out of season wear. I recently installed Ikea's Stall shoe cabinet with 4 compartments. This solved my children's futile battle of putting their shoes into a basket and then dumping all of its content just to find the perfect pair of shoes for their gym day. My kids really enjoy putting their shoes into the cabinet. One compartment is left for their hats and gloves.

4. Immediately upon arrival, hang your coat in the coat closet or on a wall-mounted entry unit. This is dependent on your space but solutions can be find even for an apartment sized entryway.

5. Install a mirror so you can check yourself before you head out the door. Surprisingly, this element is really appealing to all my kids.

6. Have a coin jar at hand for your loose change and a container for your mail.

7. A stool or a small bench for putting on and taking off your shoes. Although a set of steps will serve the same purpose if you are tight on space.

8. A clock! Whether you hang it on the wall or just have a small alarm clock on top of your shoe cabinet, it will help you to stay on task.

9. Once your system is in place, train yourself and other people in your household. Upon your arrival, make sure to put keys, shoes, coats, bags and coins into their designated spots. Enjoy the process and simplicity of clean space.
