Fresh Air Therapy

As I mentioned yesterday, I have been sick. Initially it was the flu, which eventually turned into a sinus infection. I do not get sick very often but this time it caught up with me. My two boys got sick first and then I followed. I very rarely take antibiotics. Actually I almost never visit the doctor's office; to the point that last time, about 4 years ago, I called the practice to make an appointment for a sick visit and they would not accommodate me since I have not been to their office for 3 years! Naturally, I had to find a different practice. To make this story short, the first set of antibiotics did not work and it actually made my symptoms worse. So I paid another visit to the office and got a script for different kind of medicine. I am much better! Thank goodness.

Fresh air... we all are aware of the scientific evidence of fresh air; boost in our immune system, increase in calmness and happiness and reduction of stress, burst of energy... the list goes on and on.

So I am finally feeling better and I want to share some thoughts about fresh air. Today I took all the sheets and pillow cases I have been rolling in for a week and tossed into the washer with some rosemary oil for natural disinfection. The most exciting part was hanging my laundry out on the line in my back yard. In spring and summer, it is my only way to dry laundry but that becomes somewhat challenging in winter. So with cold frozen fingers I proudly hung my laundry on the line and the sun and wind took care of the rest. There is nothing better than sleeping in air fresh dried sheets. But did you know that the sun has actually antibacterial properties so you actually sanitize your clothes while hanging it outside. It is the the ultraviolet ray of sunlight that bleach and disinfect your sheets, towels and white laundry. Also, there is nothing better than being a kid and running through the hanging laundry. I have so many found memories of my summer days running through it. I am absolutely delighted that my children know what that feels like and that they can experience the same joy and excitement.

Throughout my illness I made sure to open my windows for fresh air daily. I remember my dad always saying that even if it is freezing cold outside you need to open your windows and bring fresh air in, even if it is for only 5 minutes. Although closed windows provide warmth and energy savings, they also trap many pollutants. It is counterintuitive but indoor air quality is often more polluted than outdoor air. According to the EPA, indoor quality is on of the top five environmental health concerns. So the simple act of opening a window, even in freezing weather can have drastic impact on your indoor air quality and overall health, especially during and after sickness. My husband and I have very found memories of letting all of our children nap on the covered back porch of our house in Manayunk. They were fully dressed, in their strollers napping away no matter what the weather. It was the best medicine for them.

Be the change, open your windows and let the fresh air in.
